SOAR parents and guests program

There is a separate SOAR program for parents/guests during the summer. We encourage new students to bring up to two parents or adult guests to the SOAR Parent/Guest Program. Parents and guests will be better able to support students through this transition by learning about the university.

Explore high school-to-college transition
The transition to college affects new students and their families alike. University staff members and current students will share strategies that will help you be a source of support for your student.

Learn about UW–Madison academics and campus life
Faculty, staff, and students will present information on services and issues such as health, safety, financial planning, academic and social support services, campus housing, and transition.

Parents/guests will learn about the academic advising and enrollment process, but will not participate with students in this process. Years of experience with the SOAR program has demonstrated the importance of giving new students a taste of independence in decision making prior to beginning classes at UW–Madison. New students, consequently, will begin forming independent relationships with advisors, New Student Leaders, and faculty while having the support of family members.

Take a campus tour
New Student Leaders will lead a tour designed especially for new students and their parents/guests.

Meet other parents/guests
Parents and guests from all over the world attend the SOAR Program. Past SOAR parents/guests have found it helpful and reassuring to talk with others in the same situation.

See a sample SOAR schedule for parents and guests.

*This program is designed for adults. Younger children are discouraged from attending.
