The Center for the First-Year Experience (CFYE) hires several independent, outgoing, reliable students to work as Orientation Assistants in a team-oriented environment. Orientation Assistants play an integral part in providing logistical support to the CFYE office, the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, and Wisconsin Welcome.
Starting Wage
$8.50 per hour to start.Job Requirements
- Current UW student registered for fall 2008.
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and throughout the term of employment. **If you do not meet the 2.5 GPA requirement please provide an explanation in your cover letter.

- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to work with students and families in person, over the phone and through e-mail.
- Creativity and willingness to take the initiative.
- Ability to multi-task and efficient use of work time.
- Ability to solve problems and make decisions on your own.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment.
- Substantial knowledge of the University.
- Basic computer and software knowledge including experience with Microsoft Office and database software. Additional experience in publisher and other graphic design programs, Dreamweaver, and web-interface programs preferred.
- Experience working in an office environment.
- Willingness to learn.
Major Responsibilities
SOAR Communication- Serve as primary contact for students and families prior to their arrival at SOAR. Responsibilities include answering and responding to the SOAR Information line and e-mail inquiries. Assisting students and families in making and changing SOAR reservations in the SOAR database.
- Coordinate distribution of SOAR program materials. Responsibilities include sending confirmation packets to students with SOAR reservations and preparing materials for check-in at SOAR.
- Assist in the creation of a frequently asked questions database and assist in maintaining accurate information both in the database and on the CFYE web site.
SOAR Office at Union South
- Serve as the CFYE point of contact for SOAR advising staff. Responsibilities include providing advising staff with data (i.e. admissions information, placement test scores, etc.) as needed. Troubleshoot technology and facilities issues for advisors, students, and guests.
- Assist students and families during their advising day with general campus and SOAR information.
- Prepare materials needed for the SOAR advising staff.
SOAR Check-in
- Work with the CFYE Interns and New Student Leaders (NSLs) to check students and families into the SOAR program.
- Provide logistical and SOAR database support to Interns and NSLs during check-in.
- Collect and record all SOAR fee transactions (i.e. cash, check and credit card handling).
General Office
- Provide general clerical and office support to the six professional staff members in the CFYE office (i.e. typing, prepare mailings, compile data and maintain databases, photocopy materials, prepare nametags, organize supplies, etc.).
- Answer the main office phone number and greet visitors to the CFYE office.
- Run errands to other campus departments and other duties as assigned.
Wisconsin Welcome
- Provide support to CFYE staff planning Wisconsin Welcome events.
- Assist in creating and designing posters, flyers, banners, name tags and newspaper ads for campus events.
- Solicit and organize raffle prizes and other donations.

This position is supervised by the CFYE’s Coordinator of Communication and Technology.
