New Student Leader Position Description
We are no longer accepting applications for the 2008 New Student Leader position.
The Center for the First-Year Experience (CFYE) invites undergraduate students to serve as New Student Leaders (NSLs). Serving as an NSL will reward you with experiences and skills that will enhance your career and personal development. Each NSL plays a critical role in the success of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s First Year Experience, including both SOAR and Wisconsin Welcome.
NSLs are selected based on their ability to work well with others, communicate effectively and commit to a rigorous schedule. NSLs must display public relations skills and maturity of judgment. Additionally, NSLs must be patient, flexible and ready and willing to learn. NSLs should be resourceful and have the potential for leadership.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a leader and positive role model on behalf of UW–Madison
- Set an example of inclusivity to first year students and the NSL team
- Welcome and introduce new students, parents and guests to UW–Madison
- Facilitate small group discussions and group interactions among participants
- Inform new students, parents and guests of UW–Madison’s expectations, history, traditions and pride
- Lead campus tours and present information to groups of 200+ students, parents and guests
- Host Wisconsin Welcome events
- Provide customer service and accurate information to program participants
- Perform minimal office duties and other duties as assigned
Commit to working with both SOAR and Wisconsin Welcome - Participate in all training activities
Qualifications
- Complete at least two full semesters at UW–Madison by May 2008
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and throughout the term of employment.
- Transfer applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA for previous coursework
- Please attach a statement of explanation if you have a GPA lower than 2.5
- Be available to work on all of the dates listed in the “Important Dates and Time Commitment Requirements” section of this application packet
- No classes, second jobs or other major commitments may be pursued during the summer
